Slow but happy miles

‎17 miles on trail and a core session since yesterday. The first 16 days of mt training has taken a toll on my intensity these last few days but I’m happy to continue adding miles.

Training through fatigue to avoid pussy-ness

I’m proud of today’s training despite average performance in both workouts. It is a confidence booster to power through AM strength training and a PM 10 mile trail run when I woke up unmotivated and worn out. I managed every scheduled rep, set, and mile when I felt like doing nothing more than taking the day off. These are the days, even more than PR efforts, that build the mental toughness I need to keep improving.

Whirlwind 36 hours: running, travel, and poker

In the last ~36 hours I got in 2 solid trail runs totaling about 11 miles, made the 5 hr r/t drive to Albuquerque, played a 10-hr session of poker (+$500!), and slept in super cool homes in two different cities. Never a bored moment.

Running with friends, whether they want to or not

Feeling good, ready to hit a 21-mile trail run on some rugged and beautiful terrain. DBO is planing on joining for half, Price is less enthusiastic.

Price and DBO at The Bavarian, drinking away the pain and reflecting much sun off their scalps:

Through the snow, uphill, both ways

AM: weights
PM: 2 hour snowshoe hike. (DBO thought we should wait until tomorrow to get in another run)

Nothing like a good run after a day of skiing

AM: ski day
PM: ~5 mile run to the top and back down a 1400 ft rise (DBO and Price holding up well)

Dean Karnazes running across the country right now

If you’ve heard of one ultra-runner, this is probably the guy. He’s not the only person doing this sort of thing but he is among the best and certainly the most active self-promoter. He has run over 500 miles in the last 11 days, which is only about 422 more than me.

Friends fly in, immediately start working out

AM: core
PM: strength (with Price and DBO!)

First run with trekking poles – Ran Divisadero Peak

PM: 6 mile mountain trail in 1:15 with ~1500 ft of climbing. First time running with trekking poles, which was really nice on the steep and/or very rocky sections as well as taking the switchbacks faster than I’d otherwise be able to. I didn’t push too hard today since my left foot is bruised from snow shoeing and it started snowing at the summit, which was hard to see through for confident foot strikes.

Taos strength training routine

AM: strength – varies widely but I’m doing about half my typical 2X/week since I’m now going 3-4X/week. I prefer more push-ups and pull-ups but today’s morning workout is below.
(50) push-ups – traditional
(20) 38# db row (each side)
(12) 38# curl-press
(50) push-ups – split grip
(20) 38# db row (each side)
(12) 30# db shoulder raises
(50) push-ups – close grip
(12) 38# db curls
(12) 38# db tricep press
